I will have an artificial tree this Christmas. Are fake pine needles just as dangerous as real pine needles?
My cat didn't seem to mind the real tree we had last year, but I drove myself crazy worrying about her. She never chewed on the tree, but she did rub against it and she will try to eat anything small that's on the floor. I know real pine needles are very dangerous to cats, but what about the artificial needles? If some of the fake needles break off and she ingests them, will it cause the harm that real pine needles would?
Both fake and real Christmas trees are sprayed with fire retardant chemicals that can be deadly to a cat. To deter them from chewing the pine needles you can get spray in pet stores that they hate the smell of and will keep them from going near the tree. Also make sure its not somewhere they can jump into it and knock it over. May sound silly but my cat thinks our tree is an evil enemy and tries to climb anything to get above it and impose her wrath. You also have to be very careful of what you put on the tree. Tinsel if ingested can cause intestinal damages. Just make sure your ornaments aren't easily knocked off, or they will be found in every nook and cranny of your home.
